Croatia has between 40 and 50% of its territory forested. But, due to climate change, many spruce-dominated forests are suffering heavily from bark beetle attacks and need to be cleared. Also forest fires are causing a lot of damage, especially more south in the country. Compensating by Planting / Sumoborci are campaigns driven by the Scouts of Croatia and HEARTH thinking&doing agency. They plant multi-species to restore destroyed public forest land (managed by State forest agency Hrvatske sume) and at the same time help educate the new generation about biodiversity and climate resiliency.
Compensating by Planting is collaborating with the "European Tree Planting Day" initiative, joining forces to focus on reforestation efforts in Croatia.
