Displacement, Loss, and Resilience: The Story of the Drahan Highlands
Clear out the house, remove all furniture and personal belongings, sweep the floors, wash them, and hand over the key to the nearest gendarmerie station. Leave behind your home, your farmland, and often, have nowhere to go.
This was the fate of more than 18,500 people from the Drahanská Highlands, where, between 1942 and 1945, the Wehrmacht established a military training ground. Had Germany won the war, the original inhabitants would have been permanently replaced by German settlers.
The residents of 33 villages were forcibly displaced, and after the war, many had nowhere to return—their homes lay in ruins. It took years of relentless determination and collective effort before life could be restored in their villages.
On the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the end of the war, we have joined forces with the municipality of Bousín to plant this year’s Alley of Freedom right here. Trees and the people of this land share a common spirit—strength, resilience, and the ability to take root once again, even in the face of adversity.
